Locomotive History
D5634 or Brush Type 2 was built by Brush at its Falcon Works, Loughborough. Its first British Rail no. was D5634.
It entered traffic on 21st July 1960 and was allocated officially to Stratford.
The locomotive was originally fitted with a Mirrlees JVS12T engine but due to cracking BR decided to replace all the engines with the English Electric 12SVT 1470hp engine which had already proven itself in the Class 37. Both engines were 12 cylinder vee form engines.
D5634 received its new English Electric engine and the new corporate blue livery with full yellow warning ends by 2 May 1968. It was renumbered under TOPS as no. 31 210 in March 1974.
Withdrawn in February 1992, with power unit issues and stored.
In 2003 the loco moved to the Dean Forest Railway under new ownership and has been under long term restoration to an extremely high standard.
In February 2024 the loco moved to the Great Central Railway Nottingham under the custodianship of the Type One Locomotive Company.
